If the wire back to the panel does not have 3 conductors plus a bare ground then it should be upgraded. I don’t love shortcuts especially with big appliances, but it’s also a long run from box that’s going to be really hard to re run. Keeping that in mind, I tried to give as many suggestions as I could about 220 wire for dryer. Also, don’t forget about the proper switching process.
Gas clothes dryers and electric clothes dryers have much different electrical needs. A gas dryer produces heat by burning either natural gas or liquid propane gas, and it uses 120-volt electrical current merely to spin the dryer compartment and run the controls. A gas dryer plugs into an ordinary 120-volt electrical outlet, and it has a cord fitted with an ordinary appliance plug. There should be no wire or metal tab connecting the ground screw to the center terminal on the terminal block. If there is, the dryer is set up for a three-prong cord. The standard 110v power socket found in most homes work well with small appliances and welders. If you want to run a power-hungry appliance such as a large welder, you need a 220 v power plug. Connect the White Neutral Wire at the Outlet
Remove the screws holding the clamp halves together. Insert the tab of the top half into the cord hole and fit the center of the clamp piece over the top of the cord. A couple of years ago I sold a guy a 220v air compressor. A couple of days later he said that it wasn’t running right. I was going to refund him but I took my dmm just in case.
This configuration did not include a dedicated ground connection; the dryer’s equipment ground was connected to the neutral conductor in the dryer cord and the household circuit. From the information you have provided, the stack washer dryer unit that you are referring to requires two separate dedicated circuits. The exact specifications for these two circuits will need be identified including the Voltage and Amperage for each circuit. Once the complete specifications have been clarified then the circuit configurations may be made. The voltage and amperage is vital to size each circuit for the correct wire size, box enclosure, receptacle outlet and the circuit breaker.
Remember that if you happen to have an older dryer with a three-prong cord, you will need to replace its cord with a four-prong cord to match your new four-slot outlet. This is an easy project that takes just a few minutes to complete. Install a new strain-relief fitting to secure the cord where it enters the dryer panel.
Finally, turn on your unit and after it warmed up, activate those lines that you need, and do it one at a time. Understand color coding of conductors in the cord set. Don’t forget the ground strap or green wire jumper from the center connector to the dryer frame. A four-slot receptacle, four-prong plug configuration is therefore somewhat safer than the older three-slot, three-prong method, since it has a dedicated grounding pathway that serves no other function.
Strip about 3/4-inch of insulation from the ends of the white, black, and red wires. I’m assuming the green/yellow wire in the image is connected to some internal components of the dryer. There’s no bonding strap running from the case to any terminal. And since your dryer might be older or newer than your outlet, dryer manufacturers don’t bother giving you an appliance cord because it might not work for your situation.
